Stanislavsky Acting Method

Stanislavsky's acting method is utilized by actors to truly get in touch with their characters. Through this deep understanding of their characters, actors can be prepared for any situation, and bring their characters to life as true complex people. This idea is described by him as the "Magic if". This is similar to modern-day forms of method acting in that the core idea is that actors must truly understand their characters to play them well. It is more than just reading lines or reacting, but becoming so in tune with the person you are portraying that you can see their reasoning in every decision they make. The lines begin to flow out of you because they are coming not just from the script but from your heart. To achieve this, Stanislavsky suggests that when actors are preparing for a scene, they must ask themselves and their characters some questions. Why are they here, what are they doing, why are they doing what they are doing, what do they want, where are they, how do they feel about who they are talking to? All of these questions allow actors to truly understand their character at the moment, and when the decisions they would make while acting become parallel with the decisions the character has made, that is when they can begin to truly play a character well. Stanislavsky's method is meant to bring characters to life, and through this shows can be taken to the next level. Performances become even more intimate and impactful, and actors deliver better performances then they could have achieved otherwise.
