Artaud Versus Grotowski, TEAM

In Artaud's version, tension is created in the movements of the actor as well as their actions and the perspective that the audience observes from. The awkward, jarring, and purposeful movements suggest an almost robotic, and extremely ritualistic movement. While this is similar to Grotowski, Artaud differs in that some semblance of a story is maintained. With the tension the plot brings forth, Artaud uses the emotion it invokes in an interpretive fashion that brings the audience out of their comfort zone. They are made tense by the fishbowl perspective that makes one feel small and distorts the facial features of the actor, and it also allows us to in a way to relate to the goldfish that is in the fishbowl. Thus, when the goldfish is being harmed by the actor, further discomfort and tension can be found. Emotion is created in both Grotowski's and Artuad's versions, and while they are similar in their objective the technique's used are different. Both Grotowski and Artuads main objective is to get the audience to feel, thus everything they do is designed to pull out peoples emotions. Artuad does this by implementing his "Theater of Cruelty" Through his bombardment of the audience with lights, set design, line deliverance, and sound Artuad shocks the audience into whatever feeling he wishes to impart on them. In the five truths video, he does this by using the fishbowl perspective to distort the sound, the actor, and the lighting, this causes a feeling of stress and discomfort which is in many ways similar to the feelings associated with grieving. In contrast, while Grotowski also wants people to feel, he does not approach it by designing the theater to do so. Instead his theater is stripped down to it's simplest, rawest form, and uses that to convey the intended emotions. Through repeated actions, ritualistic movement, and interpretive movement, Grotowski's actors also shock the audience into the intended emotion, but in a much more barebones way. This also plays into how both of these men set the atmosphere, their use of lights, sound, set design, or lack thereof curated an intended atmosphere which is ideal for what they intend to do, while also not always being focused on suspense of belief. It is also through these techniques that the audience gaind their meaning, the main objective is to get them to feel, so how they convey emotion is also how they convey their meaning.
