The Paper Birds Exercises

 The Paper Birds and verbatim theater techniques have a lot of interesting ideas and theories. I particularly like their focus on tackling large issues by focussing on a stimulus and creating a sort of thought-provoking scene. I am especially intrigued by their techniques involved with research and umbrella themes and I am interested to see how much more can be achieved when we spend some time critically thinking and researching a topic, as opposed to going off our gut feelings. I would definitely be interested in implementing aspects of verbatim theater into some of our classwork and I've drawn a lot of parallels with our lyric movement scenes. I believe all of this work will help our theater especially movement-wise come off in a more thought-provoking manner and more sophisticated.

  For Pipeline I would attempt to take an Afro-Surrealist to the play, blending reality and the fantastical to convey the true nature of systemic racism. Afro-Surrealism is a medium through which filmmakers and other visual performers attempt to portray their reality in a systemically racist society. T.I.K.T.B.T. - T.E.A.M.

 Tension: The play's tension is mostly established through the character's dynamics with each other and their interactions. The dialogue is especially poignant and realistic and accentuates the emotional depth of the scenes. The simplistic set design allows the audience to focus on the character's emotional monologues while also deepening the meaning with movement and set changes as the monologue proceeds. The use of dark blue lighting to illuminate these things while at the same time not drawing attention was a smart move. The build-up of the character's monologues and conversations with each other and the inevitable shift into an argument provides a realistic and tense depiction of dysfunctional family dynamics as well.  Emotion: As mentioned before, much of the emotion stems from the raw and powerful dialogue between the family members.
